How HeatShield Products Fail - and How We Fix Them
HeatShield is a legitimate product. It’s a water-based cerfractory sealant, and when it’s applied to the right flue in the right conditions, it works. But it fails in predictable ways around here, and most of what we repair in Gaithersburg falls into a few familiar categories:
- Improper original application on the HeatShield standard system. The original HeatShield formula goes on as a two-coat system: a base coat to fill voids and cracks, then a top coat to seal. If the first applicator skipped the base coat, the top coat starts peeling within one heating season. We see this constantly in older brick-stack homes near the Rio Washingtonian Center corridor. Fix: full removal of the loose material and a proper two-coat reapplication, camera-verified before and after.

If it’s major, no coating will hold, and we’ll say so.
- HeatShield Supreme over-sprayed onto the smoke chamber. The Supreme product is for flues, not smoke chambers. We occasionally find smoke chambers that were “improved” with it, creating an uneven, lumpy surface that catches soot. Fix: removal and a proper parge coat, which is what the smoke chamber needed in the first place.
