HeatShield Chimney Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Chimney Repair in Gaithersburg: What to Know First

HeatShield chimney repair in Gaithersburg typically runs $1,200-$3,400 depending on the flue height, access, and whether we’re re-coating a single flue or rebuilding the crown at the same time. Most jobs are completed in one day; the coating is usually fully cured and ready for a fire within 48 hours. We’re an independent HeatShield service provider, which means we recommend the product when it’s the right fix and tell you plainly when a new liner makes better sense.

Call (240) 220-9395

This page is for Gaithersburg homeowners who already have a HeatShield coating (or the CeCure joint system) and are now looking at cracks, spalling, or a failed patch from a previous contractor. If that sounds like your chimney, call (240) 220-9395 and we’ll get a camera down the flue before quoting anything.

How HeatShield Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

HeatShield is a legitimate product. It’s a water-based cerfractory sealant, and when it’s applied to the right flue in the right conditions, it works. But it fails in predictable ways around here, and most of what we repair in Gaithersburg falls into a few familiar categories:

  • Improper original application on the HeatShield standard system. The original HeatShield formula goes on as a two-coat system: a base coat to fill voids and cracks, then a top coat to seal. If the first applicator skipped the base coat, the top coat starts peeling within one heating season. We see this constantly in older brick-stack homes near the Rio Washingtonian Center corridor. Fix: full removal of the loose material and a proper two-coat reapplication, camera-verified before and after.
  • CeCure joint separation. HeatShield’s CeCure system uses a flexible membrane over the mortar joints between clay tile sections. In Gaithersburg’s freeze-thaw cycles, that membrane tends to lift at the exact spots where original mortar was already receding. What looks like a whole-liner failure from the top is often just failed joint material. Fix: scrape, re-point the joints where needed, and reapply CeCure properly.
  • Crown and wash deterioration exposing the coating edge. HeatShield protects the inside of the flue, not the crown at the top. When the crown cracks (which happens here every few winters), water gets between the coating and the original tile, and the bond fails from the outside in. Fix: repair or rebuild the crown first, then re-coat. Doing only one of those is a half-job that will fail.
  • Flue tiles cracking behind the coating. HeatShield doesn’t stop existing clay tiles from cracking further if the chimney moves, settles, or takes on water. When the tile shifts, the coating above it cracks too. The camera shows the offset. Fix: if the tile offset is minor, HeatShield’s Supreme refractory may be applied to bridge the gap. If it’s major, no coating will hold, and we’ll say so.
  • HeatShield Supreme over-sprayed onto the smoke chamber. The Supreme product is for flues, not smoke chambers. We occasionally find smoke chambers that were “improved” with it, creating an uneven, lumpy surface that catches soot. Fix: removal and a proper parge coat, which is what the smoke chamber needed in the first place.

If you’re seeing flaking, white streaks, or water in the firebox, these are the usual causes. The camera doesn’t guess. Neither do we.

  2. 2
We run the camera before recommending anything. NFPA 211 Level 2 inspection, full video of the flue from top damper to crown. This is Clause 4 of the Haven Standard, and we’ve done it on every job since 2009.
  3. 3
Written price, written scope, written warranty. You get all three before anyone starts. No “call for a quote,” no surprises. We walk you through the camera footage if you want to see it yourself.
  4. 4
Parts decision: OEM or equivalent. HeatShield materials are available through our supply network, and we use them when spec matters (warranty-safe, tested compatibility).
